Social and Emotional
Second Step Curriculum
Components of the Second Step curriculum are taught in all PK-6 classrooms throughout the school year by Miss Gebhard (DPS) and Mrs. Mahany (DPS), and Mrs. Cripps (EBH). The lessons directly teach a number of skills related to learning, emotional regulation, empathy and problem-solving. A great resource for families is the Problem-Solving Steps Flowchart.
Leader In Me and the 7 Habits
What "Leader in Me" Schools DO?
Instead of focusing on academic measures alone, Leader in Me embodies a holistic approach to education, redefining how schools measure success. This approach empowers educators with effective practices and tools to:
- teach LEADERSHIP to every student,
- create a CULTURE of student empowerment,
- and align systems to drive results in ACADEMICS.

Development of Social and Emotional skills based on CASAL Standards
Teaching and assessing various social and emotional learning standards is as important to a student's development, as any academic skill. The Dansville PK-12 Counseling Department is committed to improving these abilities in all students. Tier 1, or initial instruction, is included in the Second Step (K-6) lessons, Leader in Me activities, and grade-specific activities at all grade levels. Some of this learning also occurs in classrooms, as well as through PE (K-12) and Health lessons (HS).
